Technology in Project Management: Key to Flexibility

Lady with gears looking at a computer showing that she is embracing technology.

Being in the construction industry for over two decades, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of technology in design and project management.

Considering we are in a fast-paced world, it is important that we embrace technology as it is one of the key aspects in providing flexibility while we manage multiple projects and deliver them remotely.

Technology has revolutionised the way we manage projects, bringing efficiency, transparency, and collaboration to the forefront.

Over the years, I have embraced various project management computer programs and software, tailored to the unique needs of construction projects.

These programs streamline processes, automate tasks, and provide real-time insights into project progress. Some of my go-to project and construction management programs are Autodesk products, such as AutoCAD, Revit and BIM 360.

These cloud-based platforms allow teams to collaborate seamlessly on construction projects, from design to construction and beyond. With features like document management, model coordination, and field management, they enable us to manage complex projects more efficiently and effectively.

Another essential tool is Procore.

Designed specifically for the construction industry, Procore offers a comprehensive suite of project management features, including scheduling, budgeting, and quality control. Its user-friendly interface and mobile capabilities empower teams to stay connected and productive, even in remote or field-based environments.

Project management software plays a crucial role in facilitating flexibility by providing real-time access to project data and fostering collaboration across distributed teams. Whether it’s coordinating with subcontractors on a construction site or collaborating with remote teams, these programs enable seamless communication and decision-making.

This discussion wouldn’t be complete without talking about the integration of AI.

Many AI tools today have the capability to forecast risks in projects, plan and project critical paths, as well as preempt resource capability and capacity. Two good AI platforms to explore are ChatGPT and PMI Infinity.

Lastly, while we learn to embrace and leverage technology, it is also important to promote a culture of flexibility within the project teams.

This means encouraging open communication, embracing change, and empowering team members to take ownership of their work. By fostering a flexible mindset, we can adapt to shifting priorities, navigate unexpected challenges, and deliver successful outcomes for our projects.

So let’s embrace technology, encourage flexibility, and lead the way to project management excellence.
